From the Classroom to the Stage: Dylan’s Music Journey

Year 12 student Dylan is turning his passion for music into real-world experience—balancing school, study, and live performances as he works towards a future in the music industry.

Earlier this month, Dylan played his first live set at Honky Tonks in Fremantle with his newly formed band Wastelanz, and he’s already preparing for their next gig at Clancy’s this Saturday. The band came together through Dylan’s Certificate IV in Music Composition course at Mount Pleasant College, which he attends on Thursdays and Fridays as part of his personalised learning pathway through The Studio School.

“It started when some of the other students said they wanted to form a band,” Dylan explains. “They were looking for a guitarist, so I thought I’d give it a go, and now I’m playing bass and drums with them too.”

While Wastelanz might be a new band, their sound is anything but quiet. Describing their style as a mix of metal and punk, Dylan says it’s been exciting to bring a different kind of energy to local venues.

“It’s good to bring something different into venues that don’t usually hear this kind of music. Diversity in sound is almost long gone in some places. It feels good to be part of something a bit different.”

Back at TSS, Dylan has been using his project time to write, record and produce original tracks, working toward the release of his own EP. The flexible timetable and supportive structure at TSS have allowed him to focus on what matters most to him—developing his musical skills and building real experience in the field he hopes to pursue after graduation.

“Being able to do my Cert course during the week is such a nice break from regular school work,” he says. “It gives me time to really focus on what I’m passionate about.”

Dylan is one of many students at The Studio School using their time and independence to explore creative career paths, and we can’t wait to see where his music takes him next!
