TSS Students Take Fremantle’s Map of Memories to ABC Radio

Our students have been putting their storytelling skills into practice as part of the City of Fremantle’s Map of Memories Project, a unique intergenerational project capturing the stories and experiences of people across Walyalup/Fremantle.

The project began with a series of hands-on workshops led by storyteller and broadcaster Andrea Gibbs, bringing together students from TSS and Fremantle College. During the sessions, students explored interview techniques, ethical storytelling, active listening and audio recording, building the skills and confidence they would need to collect stories from members of the wider community.

Following the workshops, students had the opportunity to put these new skills into practice during a visit to Silverchain’s Hilton Day Centre. Here, they met with older community members, conducting interviews and recording personal stories and memories connected to places across Fremantle.

These audio “memory snippets” will contribute to the growing Map of Memories, an interactive digital heritage project that brings together stories, photographs and memories associated with locations throughout Fremantle. By capturing these personal recollections, the project is helping preserve the lived experiences, local stories and community connections that form part of the city’s special history.

Taking the project to ABC Radio

TSS students Max, Scarlet and Abi then had the opportunity to join Andrea Gibbs in the ABC Radio studio, to talk about their involvement in the Map of Memories.

During the interview, the students shared their experiences of meeting and interviewing older members of the community and reflected on what they had learned throughout the project.

From developing their skills in workshops to interviewing members of the community and sharing their experiences on ABC Radio, the project is a great example of learning extending beyond the classroom. Students have had the opportunity to develop real-world communication and storytelling skills while contributing to a project that celebrates and preserves the stories of their local community.
