TSS IN THE COMMUNITY

Being at the heart of Fremantle gives TSS a unique opportunity to connect deeply with the vibrant, diverse community around us. Our location isn’t just a place – it’s a gateway to real-world learning, meaningful relationships and shared purpose.

Through strong partnerships with local organisations, businesses and community groups, our students engage in experiences that benefit both them and the wider community. These collaborations spark new passions, open doors to future pathways and allow students to explore their interests in authentic, hands-on ways.

Whether it’s volunteering, creative projects or service learning, these opportunities help students develop essential skills for their lives beyond school and build values such as empathy, respect and social responsibility. At the same time, our partners gain fresh perspectives, youthful energy and genuine support for their initiatives and goals.

At TSS, we believe in creating a network of connection and care that extends far beyond the School.

StudioCast: Student-Led Podcast

Partnered with FreoCast

The Studio School partnered with FreoCast, a vibrant community radio platform housed in a shipping container studio in Fremantle, to create an exciting student-led podcast initiative. This collaboration provides students real-world experience in broadcasting, interviewing and audio production while connecting them with Fremantle’s creative scene.

Through the project, students plan, record and edit their own episodes featuring live music, local interviews and discussions about their passions and projects. Training sessions with FreoCast founder Nik Juniper provide technical and creative guidance, helping students develop confidence and professional skills. The resulting series, Studio Cast has become a regular feature on FreoCast, offering students a powerful platform to share their voices and engage with local audiences. Beyond the technical skills, the initiative has sparked growth in confidence, collaboration and communication, strengthened ties between TSS and Fremantle’s arts and cultural community, and has inspired pathways into film, media and performing arts for several students.

Finn, Year 11

“At the start of last year, I never would have dreamed that I would be that determined to do anything. Never thought I would be running a radio show.”

Cantonment Hill (Environment/Sustainability)

Partnered with Friends of Cantonment Hill, City of Fremantle

Each week, Year 10 students volunteer at Cantonment Hill alongside the Friends of Cantonment Hill community group, dedicating two hours to hands-on environmental restoration. This partnership immerses students in caring for Fremantle’s native ecosystem while learning about its ecological and cultural significance.

Activities include weed removal, litter collection and nurturing native flora, all designed to foster service learning, teamwork and environmental stewardship.

The program has increased student awareness of local biodiversity and sustainability, strengthened teamwork and initiative, and deepened TSS’s connection with the Fremantle community through consistent, visible contributions. These efforts have even opened doors for future student-led projects such as the community event at Boo Park (link to News story).

St Pats (Service and Volunteering)

Partnered with St Patrick’s Community Support Centre

The Studio School’s partnership with St Pat’s is one of its longest-running community connections, reflecting a strong commitment to service and social responsibility. It began with an ongoing Food Drive, where students collected and donated non-perishable items to support the Centre’s Food Hub and assist people experiencing hardship across Fremantle.

This collaboration grew into a Whole School Service Day, giving students the opportunity to prepare and serve meals for those in need. The partnership also inspired a student-led fashion shoot to raise awareness of St Pat’s social enterprise programs, which promote sustainable fashion and employment pathways.

Through these initiatives, students have contributed meaningfully to local support networks addressing food insecurity, while gaining leadership skills and a deeper sense of social responsibility. The ongoing partnership continues to foster creativity, awareness and positive change within the community.

City of Fremantle Mural Project

A group of students are collaborating with the City of Fremantle and our Artist in Residence, Jordan Rush, on the Our Voice, Our Mark project to design and create a public mural that will be installed in Fremantle. The initiative follows the $60,000 grant awarded to The Studio School by the City of Fremantle to support a series of student-led public art projects across the city. Through this partnership, students gain real-world insight into the public art process, from concept development to installation, while building creative problem-solving skills and strengthening connections with the Fremantle arts community.

Changemakers for Sustainability – Curtin University Partnership

Students from The Studio School are taking part in the Changemakers for Sustainability program, a collaboration between Curtin University, the Beyond Boundaries Institute, and Professor Josh Byrne (Dean of Sustainable Futures). The initiative empowers high school students to tackle real-world sustainability challenges by working alongside industry experts, community leaders, and academics.

This year, The Studio School team is contributing to the William Street Rewilding Project in Fremantle, a community-led initiative by FREODOC (Fremantle Department of Culture) to transform an underused asphalt area into a green public space for locals and visitors. The project brings together local organisations, businesses, and residents to “rewild” the heart of Fremantle, creating shade, biodiversity, and spaces for community connection.

Through this collaboration, students will gain hands-on experience in sustainability planning, community engagement, and urban design. Their learning will culminate in a public pitch at Curtin University, where they’ll present their ideas for creating positive environmental change.
