Real Stories, Big Ideas at Open Mic

At TSS, we believe in the power of lived experience and real-world learning. Our Open Mic guest series has quickly become a much-loved part of the school calendar—an opportunity for students to meet inspiring people doing meaningful work across industries, identities and ideas.

From graphic novels to grassroots activism, the sessions so far have offered something for everyone. Here's a look back at the thought-provoking guests we've had the privilege to welcome in Term 2 2025:

Shane McCarthy – Writer & Graphic Novelist
Shane gave students a behind-the-scenes look into the world of comic books and storytelling. With experience writing for iconic titles like Batman and Star Wars, he shared his journey from local creative to international author, proving there’s more than one pathway for those dreaming of a future in the arts.

Jack Hamil – Mental Health Advocate, 20Talk
With openness and honesty, Jack talked about his own mental health journey and how it led him to become a youth trainer for 20Talk. Students appreciated his energy, humour and no-nonsense advice on how to support yourself and others.

Jordan and Maya – Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC)
Jordan and Maya, activists from AYCC, led an engaging conversation about youth-led climate action. They shared stories from the front lines of environmental campaigning and gave students practical ways to get involved in local and global change.

Sandra Tricoli – Founder, Savvy Creations PR
Sandra visited TSS to share insights on personal branding and how to stand out professionally in the digital world by being yourself. She highlighted authenticity as a strength and offered students practical advice on building a digital presence that reflects who they are, especially for those beginning to think about their future careers. To help put this into practice, our Marketing team offered students the opportunity to have a professional headshot taken, ensuring they had access to all the resources to create a stand-out LinkedIn.

Jordi Greaves – Founder, West Co the Label
Fashion designer and business owner Jordi shared the story behind her clothing label and her experience using creative platforms to tackle bullying and promote self-expression. Her visit sparked conversations about resilience, identity and starting something of your own.

Guest Speaker – University of Notre Dame
A representative from the University of Notre Dame offered insights into university life, academic pathways after school and how to navigate study choices with confidence. They reassured students that it’s okay to choose and to change course to find the best pathway for you. The session was a valuable opportunity for students to ask questions and explore future possibilities beyond The Studio School.

Imogen Blow – Founder, Peachie AU
Imogen gave an honest and insightful talk about start-up culture, content creation and managing ADHD as a young entrepreneur. Students were fascinated by her work at Bloom, a co-working space for young founders, and many left the session feeling reenergised or newly inspired to explore their own ideas.

A huge thank you to every guest who has taken the time to speak with us so far. These guest sessions have not only broadened our students’ horizons but also created space for meaningful dialogue, curiosity and connections. We can't wait to see who's next on the mic!
