Stepping Beyond the Classroom: Changemakers

In Term 4 of 2025, our Year 10 students took part in the Changemakers for Sustainability program, delivered in partnership with Curtin University.

The program invited our students to step into real-world sustainability challenges, working alongside university staff, industry professionals and peers. Through the project, our students were encouraged to think deeply about impact, place and community, while collaborating beyond the school environment and applying their learning in authentic contexts.

Learning in real places, with real purpose

Rather than working through a hypothetical brief, students were asked to engage with real sites and real challenges.

What makes this project extra special is that our students were reimagining William Street, a space right on our doorstep. Working on something so close to home made it feel real and adds a personal touch to the ideas they’re bringing to life. Each group explored a different aspect of sustainability from native planting to wellbeing, with the goal of creating a more vibrant, inclusive and environmentally conscious future for the area.

Projects like this allow our students to experience what it means to apply their learning beyond the classroom, including navigating complexity, working through challenges as a team and considering how their ideas can translate into meaningful action.

Aligning with The Studio School’s approach

At The Studio School, learning is grounded in real contexts and driven by connection — to community, place and purpose. Programs like Changemakers align closely with this approach, giving our students the opportunity to work with external partners, learn from different perspectives and develop confidence in unfamiliar environments.

Through masterclasses with Curtin academics and mentorship from industry leaders, our students gained practical skills, fresh perspectives and a glimpse into future pathways in sustainability.

As our Head of Campus, Nina, reflects in the video below, experiences like this support students to see themselves as capable contributors beyond school, and to recognise the value of collaboration, curiosity and adaptability.

Looking ahead

We’re very grateful to Curtin University for their partnership and support in delivering the Changemakers program to our Year 10 students.

We look forward to seeing how this project continues to develop and where this work may lead this year.
